The competition is played on a knock-out basis and is considered to be difficult. A feature of the competition in more recent years has been the rise in influence of teams representing Connacht and the West of Ireland generally. Improving facilities and more attention to coaching has paid rich dividends at all levels of football, men's and women's. The competition is sponsored by Umbro and is therefore known for sponsorship reasons as the FAI Umbro Junior Cup. In 2013 the final will be played in the Aviva Stadium prior to the Republic of Ireland's friendly with Georgia on 2 June, to mark the 90th anniversary of the formation of the FAI Junior Council.
